Networks

Yale Wiki had a snafu with the web host a while back, and it was down for quiiiite a while.

Curious about What Happened? Or who runs the wiki?

You'll probably notice some things that are out of date. Help fix it?

Have a NetID? Then you already have a YaleWiki editor account :)

About the Networks

Yale Secure is the best, you can get along perfectly fine just using that.

  • Yale Guest
    • Cannot use Yale Resources (eg online journal subscriptions)
    • You get an annoying “I accept” screen every time you log on
    • Anyone can connect
  • Yale Wireless / Wired (Ethernet) Connection
  • Yale Secure
    • Best network! It even encrypts your connection between the computer and the "router".
    • To connect:
      • When prompted, sign in with your netID/password.
      • Accept the security certificate.

Troubleshooting

If all else fails, ask an ST!

For PCs

  1. Restart the wireless card (switch on front of laptop, or in Device Manager).
  2. Remove network from the network list, then reconnect.
    • Search "Manage Wireless Networks"
  3. Instead of connecting through the computer, try http://wifi-config.yale.edu/

For Macs

  1. Restart the airport card ("Turn airport off" and then on again)
  2. Remove network from the network list
    • System Preferences => Networks, click "Advanced"
    • Remove "Yale Secure" (or the other Yale network if you're troubleshooting that) from both tabs 1) Airport and 2) 802.1X
      • (In Lion you can't delete the 802.1X profiles without deleting the .plist file first)
  3. Remove "Yale Secure" (or other network) from Keychain Access
    • (Use Spotlight [the magnifying glass in the top right corner] to search for "keychain access")
    • Search for "yale" and remove all instances of YaleSecure and Yale Wireless
  4. It might be fixed at this point! If the above don't work, you might need to delete certain .plist files and restart the computer.
    • Navigate to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.
    • Copy all of the files to the desktop to have as backup (dragging and dropping to the desktop will do).
    • Delete all of the .plist files that contain words like "airport" or "network." The student will need to supply an administrative password for the computer.
    • Restart the computer. The .plist files should regenerate upon startup, and wireless should work again.
  5. Instead of connecting through the computer, try http://wifi-config.yale.edu/
  6. After the student reconnects (if it works) make sure that "Yale Secure" is their preferred network.
